The NBU named the main mistake with the card: it has already cost Ukrainians billions.

With the increase in the number of fraudulent transactions with payment cards, losses have also increased
In 2024, the number of fraudulent transactions decreased by only 1%, but the total amount of losses from such actions increased by 37%, reaching 1.1 billion hryvnias. However, the relative number of fraudulent transactions per one million expenditure transactions decreased by 8%.
The internet is the main environment for criminal activities
According to the National Bank of Ukraine, in 2024, 83% of fraud cases occurred online, and the amount of losses from them increased to 93%. The average amount of one illegal online transaction was 4,761 hryvnias - 51% more than the previous year.
'The indicators of losses from fraud for 2024 show that in most cases, people become victims of fraudsters due to non-compliance with basic payment security rules.'
Social engineering is the cause of many fraudulent activities
84% of the total amount of losses from fraud was caused by cases where customers voluntarily disclosed personal data, card details, codes, and passwords. The National Bank urges citizens to adhere to safety rules such as protecting personal data and avoiding suspicious links.
'Therefore, in 2025, the National Bank plans to continue the practice of raising citizens' awareness about the rules for the safe use of payment cards and internet banking.'
In the case of unauthorized transactions, citizens must immediately block the card and report to law enforcement authorities. Additionally, a 'blacklist' of bank clients will be created in Ukraine.
