Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met on Monday, June 24, with the top leaders of European institutions and the North Atlantic Alliance to coordinate joint efforts to support Ukraine.

The negotiations included European Council President Antonio Costa, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

"For us, the most important thing is the unity of NATO countries, all of Europe, and the European Union. This opens the way to strengthen Ukraine, providing us with strong support to help all our people. Thank you for air defense, additional military packages, and for standing firmly by our side," said the Ukrainian leader during the meeting.

Support and negotiations

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte expressed confidence that future support for Ukraine will be closely related to the defense spending of alliance member countries and provided on a long-term basis. Participants discussed Ukraine's participation in the new defense tool SAFE, as well as the negotiation process regarding Ukraine's membership in the European Union.

"I am very pleased with the recent assessment by the European Commission regarding your work on reforms. Undoubtedly, we have reached the conditions for continuing the negotiation process for EU accession," said European Council President Antonio Costa.

Sanctions against Russia

A significant portion of the negotiations was devoted to preparing the 18th sanctions package of the European Union against the Russian Federation. The new measures are expected to increase pressure on the Russian energy and banking sectors. Ursula von der Leyen added that the 18th sanctions package will be tough and significant for Russia.

The meeting took place during Zelensky's working visit to the Netherlands, where issues of joint drone production and new defense packages were also discussed.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a meeting with European leaders to strengthen support for Ukraine, discuss the country's membership prospects in the European Union, and prepare new sanctions measures against Russia. The negotiations were successful, and the Ukrainian leader expressed gratitude for the support and confirmation of assistance from partners.
