Officials from Japan and Australia expressed 'collective surprise' at the Pentagon's demand. The Japanese Ministry of Defense claims that it is difficult to respond to a hypothetical question about the situation in Taiwan, as any reaction requires consideration of legal norms.

It is important to note that the Pentagon is trying to define the role of Japan and Australia in the event of a conflict between the US and China over Taiwan. US Deputy Secretary of Defense Elbridge Colby insists on resolving this issue to strengthen deterrence against China and preparedness for a possible war over Taiwan.

Earlier, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte expressed concern about a possible provocation by China leading to an armed conflict between Russia and NATO. He believes that a Chinese attack on Taiwan could provoke Russia to attack Europe.
