NATO Alliance Transfers Information on Weapon Standardization to Member Countries
The NATO Alliance has begun the process of transferring some classified information regarding the standardization of weapons and the expansion of production capacities to NATO member countries and the European Union. This was reported by Bloomberg, citing sources.
NATO's strategy is aimed at increasing production in light of threats from Russia. The Alliance is seeking opportunities to share data with defense companies to stimulate the expansion of their production capacities.
The data transfer process will require consensus among NATO countries and could be completed within a few months. The Alliance also plans to share some secret standards with the European Union, which includes most NATO countries. These standards are intended to harmonize the Armed Forces of member countries of the Alliance and achieve compatibility among them. In particular, standards may include criteria for weapon calibers and general military terminology.
The acquisition of this information will allow the European Union to establish norms for military issues and dual-use matters, for example, radio frequencies.
A NATO representative confirmed that the Alliance is actively working to share standards with the European Union and engage industry in cooperation. Previously, NATO had already passed non-secret standards to the European Union, which was recognized as an unprecedented act of trust from the Alliance's defense structures.
These steps have been initiated by the new Secretary General Mark Rutte to strengthen cooperation between NATO and the EU.
