The first Chinese citizen was captured by fighters of the 2nd mechanized battalion of the 157th separate mechanized brigade near Tarasivka, and the second was taken by servicemen of the 1st mechanized battalion of the 81st separate airborne brigade near Bilohorivka.

Both prisoners are unharmed but receive medical assistance in accordance with the Geneva Convention. For interrogation, they were taken to Kyiv, where they are held in accordance with international law. Interrogations are conducted with the participation of translators.

According to the prisoners of war, they were captured while performing their first combat mission.

One of the detainees is a Chinese citizen born in 1991. He was unemployed before his conscription. According to the investigation, he was recruited by a Russian representative on the territory of China. In February 2025, he arrived in Moscow and signed a contract.

The second prisoner, born in 1998, arrived in Russia in December 2024, allegedly for tourism purposes. Later, already on Russian territory, he saw an advertisement on the internet for military recruitment with a promise of 2 million rubles. After that, he applied for contract service.

The Security Service of Ukraine is currently verifying the testimonies of the prisoners and conducting investigative actions to establish all circumstances of the involvement of Chinese citizens in the war against Ukraine on the side of Russia.

The investigation is being conducted under the leadership of the Office of the Prosecutor General under Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine - 'Violation of the laws and customs of war'.

On April 8, President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that Ukrainian military personnel in Donetsk had captured two citizens of China who fought as part of the Russian army. Zelensky instructed the Minister of Foreign Affairs to immediately contact Beijing and clarify how China plans to respond to this.

Two citizens of the People's Republic of China were captured in Donetsk by fighters of the 81st separate airborne Slobozhanske brigade of the Air Assault Forces and the 157th separate mechanized brigade.

Currently, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China is verifying information about the capture of citizens of the PRC by Ukrainian military.
